Self-Test I - C. A. G. E.
There are two very good self questionnaires that give a good indication that your drinking has gone beyond the social level and it is time to address the problem. There is only one way to complete the questionnaires and that is with 100% honesty. Without that the results are meaningless.
CAGE is an easy to use screening test for problem drinking and potential alcohol problems. Answer the following questions:
1. Have you ever felt you should Cut down on your drinking? Yes/No
2. Have people Annoyed you by criticising your drinking? Yes/No
3. Have you ever felt bad or Guilty about your drinking? Yes/No
4. Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover (Eye-opener)? Yes/No
If you have answered ‘yes’ to 2 or more of the questions it is considered clinically significant and you should seek professional help.
[CAGE was developed by Dr. John Ewing, founding Director of the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, CAGE is an internationally used assessment instrument for identifying alcoholics.]
