Nova Vida’s treatment programme for Chemical Dependency includes many of the research based interventions that have been shown to be successful for many years...
...including Group Therapy, Assignment Groups, Step Groups and attendance at 12 Step meetings. However, we have also
included newer interventions that have been used successfully in treatment centres around the world and help to provide more individualised treatment. All our patients will attend ACE, the Adventure, Challenge and Experiential programme and the Equine Assisted Psychotherapy groups.
Exposure Response Prevention, ERP, is a treatment designed to help patients who have a history of relapse or are destined to return to an environment heavy in triggers. It is a cue-exposure procedure that exposes a patient to their drug of choice including alcohol and the paraphernalia they use to prepare and use them. The therapy is conducted in a safe environment under the guidance of the only licensed practioner in Europe for this type of treatment. Very few of our patients are expected to have this included in their programme but for those where the need is identified it could prove to be the end to the nightmare of relapse.
Having trained in the USA and licensed to facilitate these groups, our Adventure, Challenge and Experiential, ACE, Counsellor will take patients through a number of experiential challenges using low elements and experiential initiatives in order to help patients identify areas in their lives they need to address, for example trust.
The horse has shown itself as being typically non-judgemental and one of the animals on the planet that mirrors the emotions of the human race and can identify and respond in its own way to how we feel. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy is used to help patients gain insight to their feelings and behaviours and can be fundamental in moving a patient forward who has become ‘stuck’ in their recovery. Trained and qualified in the UK our
Equine Counsellor will lead patients through the therapy in a safe and reassuring way.

“...the stay in the clinic was quite an experience and the staff and the other patients made me feel at home rather quickly. The fact that I was with a small group( 7) of men and women with similar problems made it easy to talk about my problems and the openness of the other patients was an eye-opener. During my stay I had also a lot of fun but recovery is a serious business and not easy and I needed the help of the staff and other patients.
I left Portugal convinced that alcohol was for me no longer an option and now almost 18 months later I am still convinced this has been the best decision. Counselling, Nova Vida’s monthly aftercare sessions in the Netherlands and the support of my family and friends have helped me to stay on the right track.
I am extremely happy and proud to be able to live without alcohol.”
