Dr. Pedro Larisma MBChB, MRCPsych
Psychiatrist
Dr Larisma joined the Nova Vida Recovery Centre as a visiting psychiatrist in 2009 to add further strength and depth to the care offered to our patients and to allow more difficult dual diagnosed patients to be treated. Subsequently he has become Nova Vida’s
principle source of psychiatric care. With excellent relationships with other consultants, doctors and the private hospitals on the Algarve Dr Larisma offers swift access to specialised care should it be needed.
Dr Larisma qualified in Cape Town, South Africa in 1992 and moved to the UK where he completed his higher specialist training in General Adult Psychiatry and Addictions Psychiatry in Glasgow, Scotland. In 2002 he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Dr Larisma worked in addictions in Scotland until he returned to his native Portugal in September 2008 to take up a position as Consultant Psychiatrist at Faro Central hospital. He is also a clinical tutor at the new medical faculty at the Algarve Hospital as well as building a thriving private practice. He is registered with the General Medical Council (London) and the Ordem dos Medicos (Lisbon).
Dr Larisma has a special interest in addictions psychiatry and is a member of the Society for the Study of Addiction. He brings to Nova Vida an enthusiasm and up-to-date knowledge of addictions medicine that compliments the research based therapy programme. Dr Larisma works well with the Nova Vida clinical team and is keen to allow therapy to be the principle therapeutic intervention rather than a solely pharmacological approach.
