The Family programme is an important aspect of the work we do and patients are strongly encouraged to involve family members in their treatment journey. We know that treating an individual within the context of the family considerably enhances the outcome. Often we also encourage close friends or work colleagues to also be part but this is usually separate from the family members.
Nova Vida Recovery Centre aims to provide a safe, structured and supportive environment in which family members, friends or colleagues, can acquire the necessary strategies and skills to understand the nature of addiction and learn how they can move forward in their own lives as well as support their loved one, friend or colleague in their journey of recovery.
The non-residential Family Programme (free of charge) usually runs from Saturday morning until Sunday afternoon and is designed to enable participants to gently confront old myths and beliefs about addiction and how it affects the family. It is delivered through workshops, lectures and group work by members of the Clinical Team who have had specific training in family work and aims to improve the quality of family life, allow families to focus on themselves, learn from the strength and experience of others, understand the facts about addiction and dispel the myths.
During the Family Programme there will also be an opportunity to attend Family Conferences with your loved one where the emphasis is on the improving the communication within the family and starting the process of healing the rifts brought about by the illness of addiction.
Nova Vida’s Family Programme normally runs once a month at a weekend but where weekend attendance is impossible we can also accommodate a family visiting during other times. Although a full family programme might not be available in a mid-week visit we will endeavour to put together as many of the important components of the family programme as we can.
We are committed to supporting the family as well as the patient through their journey of recovery and we are always available to offer that support after the final discharge from the residential part of
treatment. We are never more than a phone call away.
My husband and I would like to thank all of you at Nova Vida for making our weekend at your Family Programme such an experience. All of your team were extremely kind, understanding and welcoming it made us so happy our daughter was under your care.
The food was wonderful and the ferrying us around made it so simple particular as it was at times a very emotional experience for us both. I would like to say very special thanks to the therapists who displayed a passion for what they did and a skill in handling our meetings with our daughter. A lot needed to be said and by the end of the weekend we walked away with a sense of relief particularly as we now feel we have our daughter back. The educational aspects of your programme opened our eyes and highlighted our ignorance which is shared by the vast majority of the country.
Thank-you once again and God bless you all.

Addiction has long been known as a family illness with usually 3 or 4 family members being affected by the problem. Usually the affect is dismissed as “It’s not my problem” or the consequences are not felt until the patient is safely in treatment and the strength that kept the family together dissolves with the relief that the problem has been removed. This equally applies to close friends and work mates who have refrained from distancing themselves because of a sense of loyalty or friendship. Often there is a lack of understanding and too many unanswered questions beginning with ‘Why’?
